Street Art Lecture / Bushwick Collective Tour
Street art embraces important cultural themes, human drives, and social dynamics. From spray paint and roller muralists to stencils, stickers and wheat paste posters, contemporary street artists exploit an incredible range of expressive possibilities as they address issues in society and give voice to their own creativity.
The classroom lecture/presentation will explore the history of graffiti, starting with tagging in NYC in the 1970's, the evolution of letter-based styles, the intricate abstractions of “wildstyle” letterform, the transition to figurative and expressive public art, often with social and cultural themes, and the growth of international street art movements.
The tour brings street art vividly to life - the Bushwick Collective - six square blocks of Brooklyn where the entire pageant of street art is monumentally present. See the work of old school graffiti bombers next to multi-story murals by internationally known artists; witness commentary in social, political and artistic themes, manifest in spray and roller paint, wire and yarn sculpture, wheat-paste posters, stencil work, underfoot and overhead.
A donation of $5. for supplies is required for the Street Art Lecture hands-on activity.
The tour is free.
