BOPMadness 2017 - The Big Six
For more than twenty years, I’ve been doing an Oscar prediction contest. We usually do quite well as a group. Last year, it really worked the way it should, with the wisdom of the crowd meaning that the team scored a 90% overall, 95% on the Big Six, and 87% on the Incredibly Difficult Maven Section!

We called every Big Six category except Best Picture (the team went with The Revenant...but winner Spotlight was our second choice).

That wasn't atypical, by the way.

Important note: there is no fee to play the game, and we only play for that most valuable of human possessions…bragging rights.

We do ours a bit differently than most. You rank every nominee, and then you get the number of points you assigned to the winner.

For example, there are five nominees for Actor in a Leading Role. You would assign the one you thought the Academy was most likely to pick (not necessarily the one you thought most deserved it) with a 5. Your second most likely would be a 4, and so on.

Please assign each possible number to only one movie...don't pick two number 5s in the same category.

We will notify three winners: The Big Six, The Incredibly Difficult Maven Section, and Overall. That's one reason for the e-mail address being collected; another one is so that people can automatically get a record of their guesses so they can have it during Oscar night.

This is the first year we are using a Google form, which should make this more accessible and easier to complete. We do require a ranking for every nominee: if you have no idea, still guess. :) Don't worry if you haven't seen the movies...in my experience, that tends to help. When you've seen a movie, that often prejudices you in favor of its nominees...even though you otherwise would have guessed the Academy wouldn't pick them.

See you in the movies!
