Detroit is hosting the 2024 JUNIOR GOLD CHAMPIONSHIPS (July 12-20) at various bowling centers in our region. This is an annual national tournament for the top male and female youth bowlers in the United States. Detroit played host to more than 4,000 athletes and 7,000+ spectators in 2019. The USBC Youth Open Championships played host to over 1,000 athletes in the 2019 event. For this championship, all volunteers must go through SafeSport Training and have a background check completed by the USBC Registered Volunteer Program. All expenses will be covered by USBC.

The Metro Detroit USBC (MDUSBC) is the host association for the 2024 Junior Gold Championships. The tournament has six divisions – U12 Boys, U12 Girls, U15 Boys, U15 Girls, U18 Boys, U18 Girls. We are looking for volunteers to serve in the following roles:
LANE SPOTTERS Volunteers will be given a radio or flag to notify the scoring desk if there is a lane issue. They may also fix scoring issues if knowledgeable with the system. Volunteers must complete SafeSport training and are required to do a background check for this position.
OPENING CEREMONY VOLUNTEER Responsible for greeting or ushering crowds at the opening ceremony venue. Volunteers will only need to complete SafeSport training for this position.
SPECTATOR PASSES/DOOR ENTER & EXIT MONITORS Responsible for making sure every spectator has a badge coming in through the spectator entrance. This position requires sitting, standing, and roaming all day during your shift with the opportunity for bathroom breaks if someone from the event staff covers the door. You will be provided with clicker devices for getting counts of people entering and leaving the center. Volunteers must complete SafeSport training and are required to do a background check for this position.
TRADE SHOW PREP / REGISTRATION VOLUNTEERS Responsible for ushering people into the trade show as quickly as possible through the designated entry. Assist with trade show prep (e.g. stuffing bags, carrying boxes, etc.). This position requires standing all day with the opportunity for bathroom breaks and one lunch break. Volunteers will only need to complete SafeSport training for this position.
TRADE SHOW EMERGENCY EXIT DOORS Responsible for making sure nobody uses the emergency exit doors unless there is an actual emergency and the building requires an evacuation. This position will allow for sitting or standing all day with the opportunity for bathroom breaks and one lunch break. Volunteers will only need to complete SafeSport training for this position.
Bowling experience preferred but not required. As all volunteers need a USBC membership, IBC Youth Bowling will be taking care of those that do not have one processed as part of their leagues. For that, there is specific information needed in the form below.
All volunteers must complete the SafeSport online training which provides education about athlete safety for those who work closely with USBC Youth members. Some positions will also require a background screening. IBC Youth Bowling will cover all fees for volunteers.
A food break will be provided when needed and paid for by the Center Manager via food vouchers. All other drinks and snacks are at the expense of the volunteer. All volunteers will be given a volunteer t-shirt courtesy of the Detroit Sports Commission when they check-in.
If you or someone you know is interested, please complete this form. If you have any questions, please contact Phil Goodman via e-mail at phil.goodman@mdusbc.com or phone at (248) 443-2695, ext. 100.
Thank you in advance for your support. We want this to be the best experience possible for the teams and their fans visiting Metro Detroit!
