WFSE Solidarity Letter
As members of UAW 4121 we know the importance of solidarity in the face of inequality and discrimination. Right now, our fellow union members of AFSCME Council 28 (WFSE) are fighting a difficult battle with the UW administration over their right to a fair and equitable contract. The over 3000 members of WFSE work hard to keep the University of Washington running – they work in a dozens of job categories including food service, custodial, grounds maintenance, technician, and clerical jobs, not to mention in critical capacities at Harborview Medical Center and the UW Medical Center. Despite their crucial role, the UW administration is refusing to negotiate fair wages or ensure a harassment-free workplace for these workers.

Contract negotiations between WFSE members and the UW administration have reached a deadlock. Over 95% of WFSE members overwhelmingly rejected the unfair and inadequate final offer of the UW administration – a 2% raise is a poverty wage! WFSE members are demanding that UW match the 3% raise of other higher education institutions, and provide 5% locality pay to cover the skyrocketing cost of living in King County. In addition, WFSE members are fighting for better protections against workplace harassment and stronger anti-discrimination language. In December WFSE members, along with labor allies including UAW 4121 members and United Students Against Sweatshops, spoke about their struggles at the Town Hall on Inequality at UW. The workers were met with canned statistics and indifference by UW President Cauce, but they made it clear with bold statements and chants that they will continue the fight to hold UW accountable to its stated values of equity, diversity, and transparency.

Last year, WFSE members stood with us during our strike for a fair contract. In the next few weeks, WFSE members will be taking a strike authorization vote to make their voices heard. During this time, we should take action to support our fellow union members and make our position clear: we stand in solidarity with WFSE in their struggle for a living wage, for fair benefits, and for a safe workplace!

WHAT YOU CAN DO NOW:
Sign this statement of solidarity with WFSE members! Signatures will be added to the bottom of the letter periodically.
Talk to your fellow UAW members about WFSE’s fight for an equitable contract!
Be ready to honor and support WFSE’s picket line if they go on strike!
