Introduction to Data Analytics with R - Application Form
This 8-week summer course is designed to provide training to social science students, aspiring graduate students, and practitioners about the basic techniques of using R in data analysis. It covers a variety of topics ranging from basic statistical analysis, text processing, web crawling, network analysis, and visualization. It aims to equip students with the ability to independently collect, process, and analyze data in various scenarios. The course will be run by the Comparative Governance and Policy Research Centre (CGPC) of the Department of Government and International Studies, Hong Kong Baptist University. It will be offered to the general public. Priority will be given to HKBU students and staff. Admission is on a first come, first served basis. The course will be taught mostly in English, supplemented by Cantonese.
By the end of the course, students will be able to:
● Understand basic R programming
● Manipulate and process data into usable forms
● Collect structured and unstructured data from different internet sources
● Visualize data in various forms
● Conduct basic data analysis
Elgar Teo is a journalism graduate from HKU and an incoming student at the Oxford Internet Institute. He has been working on incorporating computational approach in politics and communication research at HKU and HSUHK. He has recently published in the Journal of Computational Social Science.
