The forums are for anyone interested in and working on medical education research to come together, listen and respond to work being done by Sydney researchers and connect with other researchers. The aim is to help researchers get one step closer to publishing their work and ultimately to build our institutional profile in this area.
For our next meeting will we have 2 presentations, with local and international presenters:
EXPERTISE AND EXPERT PERFORMANCE IN MEDICINE
Visiting academic Dr Allistair McRobert
Expert Performance and Learning Unit, Liverpool John Moores University
Medical simulations present a valid and reliable tool for assessment of expertise as well as for training and skill development. Scenarios can be standardized, repeated and they allow participants to interact with the patient and medical environment. The aim of this presentation is to provide an overview of the expert performance approach and introduce two studies that have employed this approach. In the first study, we examined how contextual information influences diagnosis accuracy and decision-making in simulated emergency medicine emergencies. In study two we examined performance under pressure and how Quiet eye training improves surgical knot-tying performance.
