Vernissage: Reminiscing Our Stories - The First Call for Artists exhibition by KCC
Thursday, June 7th, 2017 @6pm - KCC Gallery

The Korean Cultural Centre Canada (KCC) is pleased to invite you to vernissage of its first Call for Artists exhibition REMINISCING OUR STORIES, a group exhibition selected by the KCC.

The exhibition brings together two Korean artists: Oh Soon Sil and Lee Kyung Ah and their works of contemporary reinterpretations of Minhwa motifs, referencing individual stories, memories, and their art practices.

Minhwa, Korean folk painting, is ‘an invaluable part of Korean cultural heritage’ which represents common people’s daily life, thoughts, emotion and wishes.

Through the exhibition, the Korean Cultural Centre would like to share with our fellow Canadians the unique lyricism of ordinary people of Korea which continues to exist as a genre of Korean traditional folk art.

Lee Kyung Ah (b. 1970)
Born and raised in Gwangju, South Korea, Lee studied sculpture in Jeon-nam Art University. She only uses materials from Korea including hanji (Korean mulberry paper), seokchae (colored stone powers), and oriental watercolor paints in order to emulate the inherent attributes of traditional Minhwa. She is interested in reinterpreting the utopian outlook portrayed in Minhwa through which she could share 'hope' with those who need a little dose of encouragement and optimism in our time. Lee currently lives and works in Ottawa.

Oh Soon Shil (b. 1953)

Oh studied textile engineering in Yeonsei University in Korea. She established her career as a printmaker in Korea before incorporating collage techniques into her art making. Most of the works presented in this exhibition is part of 'Furniture Series' that she has been working on in recent years. Oh's inclination to antique furniture inspired her to explore possibilities of combining the Korean cultural markers from the past and her current art practices. Oh lives and works in Seoul, Korea.
