Evolve Cosplay Competition

The Evolve Cosplay Competition (ECC) is open to cosplays from the ever-widening field of pop culture, including sources such as film and television, anime and manga, cartoons, comics, literature, and many others, plus any original creations and characters inspired by them.

The ECC has been changed for 2024 based on previous entrants’ feedback, judges’ feedback and observations from the Evolve Cosplay Team. Please see below for more information.

ECC Preliminary Registration & Selection

Preregistration must be received before 11:59pm, August 25th, 2024 in order to be considered for the ECC.

Entrants may choose to provide as much supporting material for each of the required sections as they feel is necessary to be selected.

All entries (excluding original creations) must include an image of the character from an official source for reference.

All original creations (mashups, genderbends, etc) must include the original artwork for reference.

All original creations not designed by the entrant must include some proof of permission to recreate the artwork (emails, messages, public posts, etc) from the original artists along with this application form.

Entrants under eighteen (18) years of age are welcome to compete in the ECC, but must have a parent and/or guardian complete the Parental/Guardian Consent section (see below).

ECC Rules & Requirements

All submissions must be original work by the entrant. They cannot be pre-made commissions or purchased from third parties.

The use of prefabricated items is allowable, providing they have been substantially modified to suit the cosplay.

Cosplays cannot be inappropriate or overly lewd in nature. If an entrant is unsure whether their chosen cosplay may be viewed as such, please contact cosplay@evolveperth.com as soon as possible.

Any cosplays that have placed (1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc) or won any kind of award (Best in Show, Best Category, etc) in any previous competition will not be accepted to compete.

Cosplays can be worn by the entrant or by a model chosen by the entrant.

Models need to be preregistered before 11:59pm, August 25th, 2024. Should any complications arise with the preregistered model after this date, please contact cosplay@evolveperth.com as soon as possible.

Only one submission will be accepted per entrant.

Entrants must notify cosplay@evolveperth.com as soon as possible if they choose to withdraw from the ECC at any time after selection.

Failure to abide by the ECC Rules & Requirements may result in disqualification from the competition.

ECC Prop Requirements

No metal weapons may be used as part of an entrant’s cosplay.

All large props exceeding one metre will need to be inspected and may be safety tagged and/or cloaked at the discretion of venue staff. Additionally, any prop deemed dangerous may be removed and cloaked at the discretion of venue staff. For any concerns about props, please contact cosplay@evolveperth.com as soon as possible.

All props simulating realistic weaponry (guns, bows, staffs, blades, etc) must be clearly identifiable by having an orange tip or safety tag present.

Safety tags may be removed or obscured for participation in competitions or photographs, but must be replaced immediately afterwards.

Failure to abide by the ECC Prop Requirements may result in disqualification from the competition and/or removal from the event.

ECC Performance Requirements

Performances are not mandatory.

Entrants must provide notice of their intention to perform and what the performance will entail to cosplay@evolveperth.com before 11:59pm, July 28th, 2024.

Performances cannot contain any offensive or inappropriate content or lewd use of cosplay. Should any entrant be found in violation of this, at the discretion of venue staff, they may be asked to leave the stage or the venue and will be disqualified from the competition.

Performances must not exceed two (2) minutes.

Performances submitted are final and changes will not be accepted on the day.

Performance schedule will be organised prior to the event and entrants will be notified of any changes as soon as possible.

Entrants must notify cosplay@evolveperth.com as soon as possible if they choose to withdraw their performance.

What do I need to do on the day?

All entrants are required to sign in on the day at the cosplay registration desk in Cosplay Central (within the event) no later than 11:30am, Sunday, September 8th.

All entrants should aim to arrive and register as early as possible to allow for preparations, conversations with the judges, photographs or to make any repairs should anything unexpected happen to their cosplay.

Entrants are to attend the marshalling area no less than forty-five (45) minutes prior to the ECC. This may be subject to the schedule on the day and entrants will be notified as soon as possible of any changes.

ECC Winner

The winner of the Evolve Cosplay Competition as well as any other awards* will be announced and presented on the day.

Prizes and awards will be announced closer to the expo day and may be subject to change.

ECC General Guidelines

All decisions by the judges are final and non-negotiable.

All entrants must abide by all the rules and requirements listed here, as well as directions from venue staff and security staff present on the day.

Evolve reserves the right to change and/or edit any part of this document as is necessary, including but not limited to the rules and guidelines of the Evolve Cosplay Competition.

General Admission Guidelines

Evolve states that the following are not allowed whilst in the Cannington Exhibition Centre & Showgrounds: explosives, inflammable liquids, hazardous materials, drugs, alcoholic beverages, tobacco, advertising or signs, unsafe plants, unsafe equipment, unsafe fittings, equipment that by weight or vibration could damage the venue, smoking of all kinds, smoke machines, misters, hazers, foggers, foamers, oil crackers, dry ice and fluid dry density machines, pyrotechnics or similar atmospheric altering equipment, confetti, glitter, power dust or other such substances whether manually dispersed or by a discharge mechanism, an item that may cause alarm or distress to any person, balloons of any kind, silly string, ‘stage door streamers’ or other similar spray projected items, fireworks including sparklers, smoke generators, welding devices, stoves, heaters and similar devices (without the approval of Evolve prior to the event).

Please be aware that if Evolve, venue staff or security staff believe there is a safety risk with an entrants cosplay or any part of an entrants cosplay, they may be required to cloak it at the discretion of the venue staff. Please make sure to read through this application carefully and address all concerns to cosplay@evolveperth.com as soon as possible.

Please be aware that Evolve Pop Culture Expo 2024 is a family friendly event with younger attendees. Any cosplays deemed inappropriate or lewd may result in the wearer being removed from the venue at the discretion of venue staff.

No metal, solid, weighted, sharp, serrated or pointed weapons or props of any kind will be allowed into the venue at any time.

All props simulating realistic weaponry (guns, bows, staffs, blades, etc) must be clearly identifiable by having an orange tip or safety tag present. Safety tags may be removed or obscured for participation in competitions or photographs, but must be replaced immediately afterwards.

All large props exceeding one metre will need to be inspected and may be safety tagged and/or cloaked at the discretion of venue staff. Additionally, any prop deemed dangerous may be removed and cloaked at the discretion of venue staff.

No firing of projectiles of any kind. This includes, but is not limited to: airsoft guns, BB pellet guns, bows, NERF guns (of any kind), pop guns, etc.

NERF guns are allowed but there are to be no NERF darts or any kind of projectile loaded or used at any time.

No laser pointers or similar devices are to be used.

Excessively large cosplays that could be considered a safety risk to other attendees may, at the discretion of venue staff, be restricted from movement on the venue floor and may be cloaked. In these circumstances, excessively large cosplays may remain outside the main venue areas or can be escorted between locations by venue staff.

Evolve, venue staff, security staff, volunteers and Cannington Exhibition Centre & Showgrounds are not responsible for any damage to or loss of cloaked items after they have been left by their owner in the designated space, but will take the upmost care to ensure such items are safely and securely stored and returned.

Please follow all instructions from venue staff, security staff and volunteers and if at any point instructions are given, they must be followed. Failure to do so may result in removal from the venue.

Evolve, venue staff, security staff, volunteers and Cannington Exhibition Centre & Showgrounds will not be held legally responsible or liable for any misconduct, damages, injuries or death resulting from the breach of any of the aforementioned guidelines, or from the actions of any Evolve attendee.
