Across the globe, in different sectors and at all levels, corruption hinders effective governance, jeopardises sustainable development, and undermines the creation of fair and equal opportunities. From an advocacy point of view, corruption can lead to the exclusion of legitimate actors from policy dialogue and -making, slow down or even hinder the proper implementation of existing laws, rules and regulations, and make it hard to hold leaders to account. Hence, corruption concerns everyone, whether citizens, private businesses, CSOs, the media or public institutions.

Across the Western Balkans and Eastern Europe, corruption is perceived as a major problem (CPI 2025), it slows down economic development and presents a major obstacle to EU accession plans. At the same time, various anti-corruption approaches and tools exist and complement each other: While National Anti-Corruption Authorities help to fight corruption bottom-up, international frameworks like UNCAC or EU standards offer a top-down approach.

This RAN webinar explores what corruption actually is, why it is relevant from an advocacy point of view, and what frameworks there are to address it. Based on three case studies from the public, private and civic sector, the webinar highlights promising approaches for countering corruption from across the region. Building on this evidence, national, regional and international anti-corruption experts then explore how different anti-corruption frameworks and policy advocacy can be integrated.
