Board on Board Wood Fence

This decorative fence is considered a “Complete Privacy Fence”.  This fence is popular with home owners who own swimming pools and hot tubs since its design conceals the gaps left between the boards caused by shrinkage.  There are two layers of boards on this fence.  The first layer consists of 6” wide boards installed with a 1 ½” gap between boards.  The second layer consists of 4” wide boards.  The second layer of boards is installed over the gaps and overlaps the first layer of boards.  This design prevents people from seeing through the gaps after the boards shrink.  A decorative 2” x 4” cedar cap is installed horizontally at the top of this type of fence.  This design looks very nice and will add 4 to 6 extra inches of “height privacy” because the boards have not been cut like the Gothic Point and Dog Ear styles and considering the width of the cap.

We highly recommend using metal frame gates for walk gates and for drive-through gates when installing the “Board on Board” fence.  The “Board on Board” fence carries a lot more weight due to the extra weight of the overlap boards and the gates need the reinforcement of the metal frames to prevent sagging.  Secondly, for aesthetic purposes; the metal frames look far better on a “Board on Board” fence since the hinges are installed on the inside of the fence (post side of the fence) and the hinges cannot be seen from the board side of the fence.  If you install a wood frame gate on a “Board on Board” fence, the black decorative hardware is on the face side (board side) of the fence and will only partially be seen due to the overlap boards covering part of the black hinge which does not look very good.  The black decorative hardware installed on a wood frame gate looks great on a “Decorative Cap” fence because you can see the entire hinge since there are no overlap boards on the “Decorative Cap” style of fence.

Decorative Cap Wood Fence

This decorative fence is a popular alternative to the standard “Dog Ear” or “Gothic Point” styles of fence.  This fence includes only one layer of 4” wide flat top boards.  The boards are installed flush together with a decorative 2” x 4” cap installed horizontally on top of the fence.  This design looks very nice and will add 4 to 6 extra inches of “height privacy” because the boards have not been cut like the Gothic Point and Dog Ear styles and considering the width of the cap.  Even though the boards are installed flush together, they will shrink after the first couple of weeks, as all fencing lumber is green when received from the lumber mills. If there are concerns about gaps between the pickets after shrinkage, the Board on Board style is suggested as its design eliminates the shrinkage problem.
