Apprentice Teacher Qualification Criteria:
The Summer Academy Apprentice position is only available to new-to-DPS teachers for the 2018-2019 School Year. Apprentice Teachers must successfully meet the District's hiring requirements within three days of their start date, which is your first day of attending Summer Academy PD. Apprentice Teachers will receive an hourly rate of pay, which equates to approximately $2,000 for full participation in the Apprentice Teacher program.
Required Summer Academy Work Dates/Hours:
Work dates at Summer Academy schools are Mondays-Fridays June 11th-July 13th, or Mondays-Thursdays, June 11th-July 19th, depending on location. All schools are off July 4th-6th, 2018. Estimated work hours are 7:45-12:45 or 8:45-1:45, depending on location. Apprentice Teachers need to commit to teaching for the entire Summer Academy dates and times at their school site, and school/grade level assignments are subject to change at any time.
Required Professional Development for Apprentice Teachers:
Apprentice Teacher Orientation-May 31st or June 2nd, 8:00-4:00-Location: Thomas Jefferson High School
Host Site PD Day-June 4th, 8:00-4:00-Location: Your Summer Academy School Site
Summer Academy Makeup Launch -June 9th, 8:00-4:00-Location: Thomas Jefferson High School
First-Year ELA Teacher Qualification Classes-June 13th, June 20th, June 27th and July 11th, 1:00-3:00-Location: Place Bridge Academy *All Apprentices will report to work at 8:45 on these four dates that classes are held. You will also be excused from your Summer Academy school site in time to attend these classes.
To register for the Summer Academy Apprentice Teacher position, please complete the registration form below. Your Summer Academy school and grade level placement will be communicated to you in late spring once student enrollment numbers are confirmed. All placements are subject to change at any time based on school needs, and we cannot guarantee geographic or grade level preferences.
Elementary teachers: Please check with your hiring principal prior to completing this form to find out if you will be teaching English Language Development (ELD) with the EL Achieve curriculum, as an EL Achieve certificate can be awarded through Summer Academy ELA Teacher Qualification classes. We want to ensure that Apprentice Teachers are placed in the proper ELA Teacher Qualification classes to best meet your needs.
