Disability Acceptance & Sensitivity Training (DAST) in Our Communities
DAST for Educators:
Ramp Your Voice! strives to provide educators with the following from its DAST thrust:
• Information about the federal mandates regarding the educational rights of students with disabilities.
• The different types of disabilities, and how they may affect a student's educational and social experiences and success.
• How to create an inclusive classroom environment by integrating disability awareness learning opportunities in the education curriculum
• • •
DAST for Students:
• It is important to instill in our youth an awareness about disability, and continue to promote sensitivity to disability issues. Educating youth to understand that people with disabilities are no different than they are has the ability to shift negative perceptions of disability towards acceptance and respect.
• Vilissa ardently believes that if youths are given the knowledge and tools to understand disability, they will be able to see disability more positively.
• • •
DAST for Public & Private Businesses:
• It is imperative for businesses, in both public and private sectors, to make it a priority to hire people with disabilities, and provide the reasonable accommodations they need to succeed in the workplace.
• Business owners, hiring personnel, and managers/supervisors have to be knowledgeable about the federal laws when hiring the disabled and what their responsibilities are, formulate ways to empower disabled employees and establish an accepting work culture, and what they can do to advocate for disability rights through employability options.
