¡DUENDE! 2012 Youth Grand Slam Registration

On Saturday, April 7th, ¡DUENDE! will host its first annual Youth Grand Slam Poetry Competition. The poetry slam will be a high-octane event where 12 youth (ages 13-19) will compete for a spot on the 2012 Long Beach Youth Slam Team, to represent ¡DUENDE! and all of Long Beach at the 2012 Brave New Voices International Youth Poetry Festival in the San Francisco Bay Area from July 17-22.

WHO CAN COMPETE?
Youth (ages 13-19) are eligible to compete in the ¡DUENDE! Grand Slam. They do not have to be residents of Long Beach to participate, nor do they have to participants in the workshop. To compete, the must register online by 11:59 PM on Sunday, April 1st.

RULES OF THE SLAM
1. It is a twelve person slam.
2. There will be three rounds: in the first round all 12 youth will compete; in the second round the top 10 youth will compete; in the third round the top 8 youth will compete.
3. The top 6 highest scoring participants will be chosen as the team.
4. Each piece will be scored from 0-10 by FIVE judges. The highest and lowest score will be dropped, for a score out of 30.
5. All youth must come prepared with a minimum of THREE poems.
6. Youth are encouraged to memorize their poems before the day of the event. However, papers will be permitted.
7. Each participant has THREE minutes to perform their piece, with a 10 second grace period. If they go over this 10 second grace period, point deductions will be made.
8. Youth are NOT allowed to use props or costumes.
