A Weekend Experience of Strategy and Soul
How can we build meaningful connections in a world where we are incentivized to turn against each other? Why do humans play games? What wisdom do the Jewish ancestors offer on the upkeep of our fires, both physical and spiritual? How can Jews present as a united people if we can't even agree on what a Jew is? Does Jeff Probst count as a rabbi?

If these questions excite you, then we invite you to grab your torch and apply for "The Tribe Has Spoken: Survivor and the Jewish Experience." The weekend-long social strategy game experience is a jumping off point to tackle these deep questions with fellow Young Jewish professionals, and maybe make your own alliances along the way. 

This retreat is New York City-based, but open to all.
The Basics
  • Strategy, Not Starvation:  We will not be replicating the deprivation / suffering aspect of Survivor. We will be staying in a lovely retreat center and being fed 3 meals a day.
  • Guaranteed Full Participation: The game is designed such that everyone will be able to fully participate in all aspects of the experience -- even if you are the first one voted out of the game.
  • Not for Broadcast: While we may get content to publicize this experience so we can repeat it in the future, we aren't making a TV or YouTube show.
  • The Stakes are Low: There is NO cash prize for winning the game!

Who are you? You Respect the Game:

  • You enjoy social strategy games, and playing one sounds like your idea of a fun weekend. 
  • You are willing to play hard, and can give others permission to play even harder.
  • You are interested in exposing yourself to a diversity of Jewish thought, to finding Jewish meaning in unexpected places, and to exploring the big questions these games raise.
  • (Demographics) This experience is intended for (but not restricted to!) Jewish young professionals age 22-32 in the NYC area.

Finances

We appreciate the contributions of partner organizations, including our primary sponsor, Mem Global, for subsidizing the cost of the retreat by an estimated $600 per person, enough to cover food, lodging (double occupancy), and transit for the weekend. However, we want to ensure that this experience is, to use a Survivor-ism, "worth playing for". Participant contributions show your commitment to the retreat and will help cover the costs for the core experience -- supplies, rituals, facilitators, and game design. 

  • Early Bird Rate: Participants who apply by June 1 will be offered an early bird rate of $149. We will honor this rate even if you don't hear from us until after June 1.
  • All other participants must pay $199. 
  • If this is a serious financial burden, reach out to the organizers, as we do not wish to turn anyone away for lack of funds. 
  • Payment is expected within 48 hours of being offered a spot.
