BackgroundThe Young People’s Orchestra, conducted by violinists Margaret Matthews, and Gary Chollet, provides advanced challenges and opportunities for young musicians.
Eligibility & Audition Requirements
Eligible students include those who play percussion, string, woodwind, and brass instruments. Students are recommended to play at approximately NYSSMA Level 4 or higher. Brass and woodwind instruments are required to play all major scales, 2 octaves. Students will be asked to play a prepared solo selection, without accompaniment, and a scale.
Students should be capable of playing in keys with up to three flats and three sharps. Beginning shifting is a must. (Those not familiar with NYSSMA ratings should e-mail
info@osfl.org for information.)
Applications: The application and $15 fee are due by
noon on Wednesday, November 15, 2023. Video Auditions: Submit a video recording of a 2-minute solo selection, and 1 scale of choice by
noon on Wednesday, November 15, 2023. In-Person Auditions: Students who are unable to submit a video recording are invited to contact the OSFL
office to schedule an in-person audition for
Sunday, November 19, 2023.ParticipationOnce accepted, participation in the Young People’s Orchestra will include weekly rehearsals throughout the school year to prepare for public concerts including a side-by-side performance with the OSFL at the March concert. Rehearsals are weekly on Sunday afternoons in Horseheads, NY.
We want to make certain that financial concerns do not prevent any student musicians from participating. Tuition assistance and payment plans are available for anyone who may need it.
