The data is clear: early childhood education for infants and toddlers is life-changing, helping children grow up to  excel socially, in school, and in careers. But right now quality early childhood education in DC is expensive — and scarce. We know Mayor Bowser is committed to increasing affordability, access to, and quality of early care and education in the District, particularly for vulnerable families. The Mayor's budget engagement forums are an important way for us to let her know that we want her to continue her leadership for young families by fully funding the most forward-reaching early childhood program in the nation.

This year, we are asking the Mayor to enhance the District's child care subsidy program by $40 million to improve the quality of care infants and toddlers receive and to enable these early education campuses to raise the wages of their educators. When the District has set its mind on doing important things it has been able to find resources, from universal pre-K, to modernizing school buildings, to raising salaries for DCPS teachers, to investing heavily to maintain a strong Metro. The vision of the Under 3 DC campaign falls into that same category of important investments and we believe that a prosperous city like ours can - and must - find the way.
