Da FunDaMentals of Spoken Word and Performance Poetry 2019 Workshop with Alex Alpharaoh in Los Angeles, CA
This 35 hour, multi-week, multi-session laboratory will focus on the many facets of spoken word and performance poetry. By analyzing Spoken Words Artists, Emcees, Solo Performers, Performance Poets, Lyricists, and Monologist, individuals will learn about the various styles of SP!T, while implementing approaches to assist in the development of work. Throughout the laboratory, individuals will learn about the modern history of performance poetry and its various usages. Individuals will take material and learn how to incorporate various techniques of performance into the intimate narratives of their writing. By the end of the laboratory, individuals will be be able to write and perform original material, using one of the various approaches to performance artistry. Individuals will memorize a spoken word piece throughout the laboratory while also writing their own. Participation in class is a must requirement. No previous experience required. Open to individuals ages 14-up.

ABOUT THE TEACHING ARTIST:
Alex Alpharaoh is a nationally recognized, award winning actor, writer, director, spoken word artist, and solo performer from Los Angeles, California. He is currently touring his solo show titled WET: A DACAmented Journey throughout the country. Alpharaoh is an accomplished Spoken Word artist that has been writing poetry for over 25 years. Alpharaoh is a practitioner of the Eric Morris experiential approach of acting, which is the foundation of his body of work of over 12 years. Alpharaoh is classically trained and is based out of Los Angeles, California. Alpharaoh has taught Spoken Word and Performance Poetry workshops throughout the country at theatres and universities including EST/LA, The LATC, Hi-Arts, Lincoln Center Education, U-Conn, Yale University, SMU, UNT, The College of Wooster, and others.
