Planting at Utopia
Saturday, February 15th, 2020

The Utopia Conservation Area protects over 87 acres of creeks, wetlands, and forested habitat within the Skagit River floodplain. It was acquired in 2012 and 2014 by the Trust, primarily to protect the salmon habitat found in Wiseman Creek (Black Slough) and the Skagit River which typically flows through and adjacent to the property. Elk and deer have been known to frequent the area.

This property was protected with the support of the Skagit Watershed Council, the WA State Salmon Recovery Funding Board, and a match from Seattle City Light. Utopia is also protected by a Wetland Reserve Program conservation easement held by the Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS).

We will be spending the day planting native plants that were generously donated to us by Skagit Fisheries Enhancement Group, who are major partners in the stewardship of our Utopia property. Skagit Land Trust will provide tools, snacks, and a water refill station. Please wear sturdy shoes, dress for the weather, and bring a water bottle and reusable cup for hot beverages. Please note that parking is limited and we strongly encourage carpooling.

Directions - From Mount Vernon, take Hwy 20 East. 5 or 6 miles past Sedro-Woolley, go right on Hoehn Rd. Hoehn ends in a T at Utopia Rd. Turn east or left at T and drive down Utopia Road. The property entrance is a gravel driveway going down on the right; park along the road.

**** Please note, while we love dogs, and leashed dogs are welcome to most Skagit Land Trust properties, we ask that you keep them at home for these events. This will ensure the comfort of all guests at our work parties and other events and increase the chance of seeing wildlife.
