Location: Zoom
Data science is a synthesis of science, math and computer science! In the STEMcoding data science workshop, participants will learn about hands-on data collection activities and how to teach data analysis using spreadsheets.
Over a week and a half, meeting daily over Zoom for 3.5 hours, participants will learn about how math, science and data science all connect and relate to each other. Instead of diving into the deep end of computer science, we will focus on data collection activities with smartphones and other sensors and how students can analyze the collected data in a spreadsheet program. These activities can be used in math or science classrooms, or they can be combined to make a stand alone “data science” course. We also include a gentle introduction to JavaScript with p5.js, and we demonstrate how JavaScript programs can be a great tool for solving science and math problems. Our activities are all free and open source, and they are available on the STEMcoding Youtube channel (http://youtube.com/STEMcoding). Our activities are aligned to various math, science and computer science TEKS standards, and we include Excel versions of all our spreadsheet activities which are aligned to Microsoft's Excel industry certification.
After you register for the course you will receive a package in the mail containing some sensors needed to complete the experiments and data collection activities demonstrated during the workshop. Upon successful completion of the workshop you will receive a stipend to compensate you for your time.
This workshop is funded by the WeTeach_CS program, part of the Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC) at The University of Texas at Austin.
