Welcome! The River Detectives team look forward to working with schools across Victoria to connect young people with nature and educate teachers /students about catchment and waterway health.
The program aims to support you and your students explore your local waterway through citizen science and engaging cross-curricular activities. It is FREE, FUN and FLEXIBLE, equipping students of all ages with the knowledge and skills to take positive action on real environmental issues in the local community.
The following regions offer the River Detectives program:
- Corangamite CMA region
- North Central CMA region
- North East CMA region
- Wimmera CMA region
- Melbourne Water operations area
Some regions continue to take registrations during the 2026 school year if they are not yet at capacity by the cut off date in February.
As part of the program they may provide:
* Support by a regional River Detectives coordinator
* A water quality monitoring kit for monthly testing (must be returned when involvement ceases)
* Professional development sessions to support educators
* A school incursion
* The River Detectives website with a vast array of quality resources to inspire teaching and learning, specifically chosen for their relevance to the program
* Login details to access an interactive portal to record and explore citizen science data
* Themed cross-curricular, multi-age activity matrices on a range of water-themed topics
* Virtual learning sessions
