Utopia Opera is pleased to announce auditions for the 3rd production of its 7th season:

PASSION - March 9, 10, & 11, 2018
Music and Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim
Book by James Lapine
Based on the film "Passione d'Amore" directed by Ettore Scola

Stage Director: Benjamin Spierman
Music Director: William Remmers

Is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI).
All authorized performance materials are also supplied by MTI.

All performances are staged with orchestra in Manhattan. Performance times are March 9 at 8pm, March 10 at 3pm and 8pm, and March 11 at 3pm. The opera will be single-cast with covers for the three principal roles who will perform their roles at the March 10, 3pm performance. All performers must be available for all performances.

Coachings with the conductor and director for these shows can begin as soon as the roles are cast. There will be 2 or 3 music rehearsals/read-throughs in December. There will be no rehearsals in January. Rehearsals will begin again in February with staging rehearsals generally scheduled on weeknights and weekends. The weekend and weekday nights starting with March 2 leading to opening night must be made totally available. If availability suits, we may also consider rehearsals during the day.

Utopia Opera will be presenting PASSION as a classical-crossover chamber opera without the use of microphones/amplification and with the full orchestra performing on the same level as the cast. As such, we are exclusively looking for singer-actors with a classical background or classical-crossover experience who are able to sensitively meet the dynamic range of the score under these conditions. A vocal approach such as that heard on the original cast recording, though satisfying and appropriate in its own context, would not be suitable for the demands of our environment.
