Utopia Opera is pleased to announce auditions for the second production of its seventh season:

MARTHA - November 4, 5, 11, & 12
music by Friedrich von Flotow; text by Friedrich Wilhelm Reise
performed in German with orchestra

a pdf of the entire score can be previewed here:

Musical coachings will begin in September including sporadic readthroughs and early staging discussions. Full music/staging rehearsals will begin in regularity in October. Group rehearsals will generally take place in Manhattan on evenings and weekends, though other times may be used if availability is flexible. Complete evening/weekend availability is required from October 27 - November 3; otherwise we will do our best to accommodate your pre-existing conflicts. Not everyone will be called to every rehearsal.
The performances are at Lang Hall, Hunter College on November 4 & 11 at 7:30pm and 5 and 12 at 3:00pm. Some roles may be double-cast. The show runs approximately two hours and calltimes are approximately 2.5 hours before showtime.

This show has a large number of roles with something suitable for most everyone. The first four roles listed have demanding vocal requirements/ranges, so be sure to check through the score to check that the roles you are auditioning for are appropriate for you.

Lady Harriet (Martha) - Soprano
Nancy (Julia) - Mezzo-Soprano
Lyonel - Tenor
Plunkett - Baritone/Bass
Tristan - Bass/Baritone
The Sheriff - Bass/Baritone
Pages of Lady Harriet - 1 bass, 1 baritone, 1 tenor
Farmers and Farmers Wives - 3 of any voice type
Servant-Maids of various name and skill - 7 sopranos or mezzos

We are also looking for covers for all of these roles.

Our ideal performers are: adept at comedy (and especially adept at comedy in German), forward-thinking, quick-witted, and courageous.
