Youth Writers’ Virtual Workshop: Writing for Digital Publications

Welcome to our Online Youth Writers Workshop organised by the TheHomeGround. TheHomeGround is Singapore’s leading digital publication focused on keeping communities connected and inspired, and empowering Singaporeans to share their unique perspectives. This two full-day workshop is for young writers between the ages of 13 and 18, with the goal of familiarizing youth with the structure and writing style for different online digital contents. The workshop also provides the opportunity for participants to work up close and alongside our THG editorial team.

Workshop Overview

DAY 1

9am – 11am | Icebreaker
Why do you want to be a writer?
- Reasons behind the pursuit of writing.
- THG editors and journalists share their personal experiences in pursuing a career in writing.

11am – 1pm | Keynote
What is news and what it takes to be a journalist? A look into the ethics of journalism, different forms of writing and different forms of content (niches, beats and interests).

1pm – 2pm | Lunch
Lunch will be provided and sent to participant’s home address (lunch in breakout groups).

2pm – 3pm | Breakout group discussion
Topics that interests them and challenges they might face.

3pm – 5pm | Keynote: Understanding different kinds of publications
The difference between newspapers, magazines, books, blogs, scientific journals and more.

5pm – 6pm | Closing
Appreciating being a journalist.

9am – 10am | Career paths: Progressing as a writer
The different paths to becoming a writer.

10am – 11pm | Writing with an outcome
Techniques in writing and writing with intent.

11am – 12pm | Lunch break
Lunch will be provided and sent to participant’s home address (lunch in breakout groups).

12pm – 2pm | Breakout group discussion
Task: Write a news article in pairs.

2pm – 4pm | Evaluation of articles
Mentors evaluate written articles and share feedback with the groups.

4pm – 5pm | Keynote: Pitching
What editors look for and how to polish and pitch your articles.

5pm – 6pm | Closing
Appreciating the opportunities in digital media.
