I am a New Yorker and I demand that our elected legislators demonstrate the leadership needed to protect our reproductive rights. The Reproductive Health Act (S2796/A1748) and Comprehensive Contraception Coverage Act (S3668/A1378) are vital to ensuring that we have access to abortion and contraception, regardless of federal action. With reproductive rights under an unprecedented attack nationally, New York State must be a leader in ensuring that access to contraception and safe and legal abortion is protected.
The RHA would do the following:--> Bring New York State abortion law in line with Roe’s Constitutional protections, which safeguards women who fall through the cracks in existing state law.--> Abortion is not a criminal act and must be moved from the penal code to public health law--> Allow nurse practitioners and physicians’ assistants to provide abortion care to align NYS law with modern medical practice.
The CCCA would do the following:--> Require health insurance policies to cover ALL forms of birth control without co-pay--> Ensure access to 12 months of contraception, promoting uninterrupted and more effective use of birth control.--> Require insurance coverage for over-the-counter Emergency Contraception (EC)
The Reproductive Health Act and the Comprehensive Contraception Coverage Act are both critical to protecting reproductive health care and access in New York. The Assembly passed these bills on January 17th, now the Senate must stand up and lead. I urge you to pass the RHA and the CCCA today.
