I will set sleep mode on my computer and turn off my PC, monitor, printer and copier at the end of the day. 1
I will turn off my monitor if I plan to be away from my desk for more than one hour, especially when I go to lunch, class or a meeting.
I will turn off the lights when I leave any room, bathrooms, meeting rooms for more than five minutes.
I will disable my screensaver, as it prevents the computer from going into sleep mode which means that it is, in fact, wasting energy.
I will unplug equipment that uses standby energy such as computers, coffee makers, refrigerators, alarm clocks, and stereos when I plan to be away for long periods of time, such as going away for vacation or heading home during break.
I will take the stairs instead of using elevators whenever possible.
I will wash my clothes in the cold water cycle, which saves energy by not heating water.
I will air dry my clothes rather than using a dryer.
I will reduce my food waste.
I will utilize composting services by composting any organic or compostable material.
I will grow some of my own foods.
I will buy local produce and products.
I will buy organic produce and products.
I will turn off the water when brushing my teeth, washing my face, etc.
I will take shorter showers.
I will repair leaky faucets and "running" toilets.
I will only use a dishwasher or clothes washer with full loads.
I will use drought-resistant landscaping.
Lower Your Carbon Footprint
I will ride my bike or walk to my campus or work location at least once a week.
I will avoid unnecessary driving during the day by dining in, walking to a restaurant, grouping errands, or packing a lunch.
I will make meetings more sustainable by reducing travel and paper use and where possible, utilize a conference call line, or Skype, or schedule meetings back-to-back.
I will use public transportation whenever possible.
I will carpool whenever possible.
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
I will reduce my paper use and avoid printing emails.
I will use 100% recycled paper for printing.
I will print on both sides of the paper or use the back side of old documents to print less important documents. I will set my printer(s) to duplex printing.
I will recycle all of my paper, including sticky notes, envelopes, colored paper, and newspapers.
I will recycle all of my plastic bottles and jars, dairy tubs, glass bottles and jars, milk and juice cartons, and aluminum cans in the campus cans/bottles recycle bins.
I will carry a reuseable coffee mug or water bottle instead of using disposable or compostable cups or buying bottled water.
I will remove myself from junk mail and catalog lists.
I will use real dishware when possible. When not possible, I will purchase food in compostable to-go containers from campus eateries and compost all of my waste.
I will recycle electronics appropriately, including CD's, cell phones, batteries, and computers.
