Overview and Objectives
Sustainable economic development is a core part of APEC’s mandate for economic growth in the Asia-Pacific region. In alignment with this mandate, APEC Economic Leaders’ endorsed the
Bangkok Goals on Bio-Circular-Green (BCG) Economy (“Bangkok Goals”) in 2022, highlighting the need for economies to address environmental challenges, trade and investment, biodiversity and natural resource management, and sustainable waste management. The Manoa Agenda, introduced by the U.S. at the start of 2023, aims to develop practical work within APEC to implement the commitments made in the Bangkok Goals.
As part of the Manoa Agenda, ABAC USA developed the
Bangkok Goals on BCG Economy Pledge to serve as a platform for the business community to demonstrate their commitment to advancing the Bangkok Goals in the APEC region. Businesses are invited to voluntarily sign the pledge by identifying a new or existing commitment that aligns with the Bangkok Goals, and list specific initiatives or steps they are taking to achieve this commitment.
The list of companies signing the pledge will be highlighted at the APEC meetings in November. The pledges may be shared publicly on the
APEC Bangkok Goals website in the future. Additionally, annual reviews will be conducted by the National Center for APEC, under the guidance of ABAC USA, to ensure company pledges are up to date and accurate.
The PledgeThe Bangkok Goals outline how the region can achieve its comprehensive and ambitious objectives related to more balanced, inclusive, and sustainable growth. As such, we, the leaders of the Asia-Pacific business community, will continue to demonstrate our commitment to implement practical, ambitious, and concrete initiatives that advance the Bangkok Goals, many of which are aligned with those set forth in other international agreements, such as but not limited to the United Nations’
Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Paris Agreement’s
Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). Recognizing the role that businesses must play in achieving a more sustainable future for our planet, we pledge to implement initiatives within our businesses that advance those Bangkok Goals and foster a vision for sustainability presented by the Bangkok Goals within each of our unique economies.
