The Opportunity:  Event Volunteer: Monthly art exhibitions, live concerts, yoga classes, large community festivals and events . . . you make it all possible.  You will work with a team of dedicated staff, artists, performers and fellow volunteers to help execute these incredible events, and, have a lot of fun at the same time!
Training and Required Commitment: You will be available for a volunteer orientation with the Volunteer Coordinator and assist with at least 4 events per year.  Many events happen each month and the schedule will be based on your availability.  This is the perfect flexible opportunity for those with school, work or family commitments.
The Opportunity: Volunteer Cultural Host:  Delight, inspire and educate our guests by roaming the Garden and conducting activities with guests, engaging visitors about ongoing art exhibits, and about the Garden's history and cultural context.  You will study and learn about Chinatown, Classical Chinese Gardens, history, culture, art and philosophy.  This role is excellent for developing customer service skills and is ideal for university students, retirees, and individuals with regular availabilities during the weekdays and weekends.
Training and Required Commitment: You will be required to join in on Docent education sessions from time to time, and commit to a regular 1 to 3 day each week shift of 4 hours (depending on your availability).
The Opportunity: Mahjong Sundays Host:  Come help us set up and run our weekly Mahjong table (and Chinese Chess and Chinese Chequers) 1pm-4pm Sundays in the Hall of One Hundred Rivers. Your job will be to set up and play the games - previous Chinese Chess and Chequers experience not required, although Mahjong knowledge is important - with the volunteers and visitors who show up to play. Invite visitors to join in the table, and teach them some basic Mahjong for a game or two.  This role is excellent for those with teaching experience, and developing customer service skills. It is ideal for university students, retirees, and individuals with regular availabilities during weekends.
Training and Required Commitment: 1 half-hour training orientation on a weekday aftrenoon; hosting 12:45pm-4:15pm shifts two to four times each month.
The Opportunity: Volunteer Activity Facilitator:  Delight, inspire and educate our guests by running traditional Chinese activities and games.  This role is excellent for high school students looking for afterschool (4pm-6pm), weekend, or summer weekday volunteering opportunities. Activity Facilitators must attend a minimum of two weekday shifts before being scheduled for weekends.
Training and Required Commitment: You will be required to commit to a regular 1 to 3-day weekly shift of 2-4 hours (depending on your availability).
The Opportunity: 8 Treasures Shop Assistant:  If you like to shop, brag about your finds and make recommendations this is for YOU!  Our 8 Treasures Shop needs your assistance and enthusiasm to assists with inventory, display, and customer service.
Training and Required Commitment:  You will be available for a volunteer orientation with the Volunteer Coordinator and an interview with the Retail Manager and can assist in the shop at least 4 times per year.  Shifts will be scheduled as needed and will be based on your availability.  Perfect flexible opportunity for those with school, work or family commitments.
The Opportunity: Docent/Cultural Interpreter:  Delight, inspire and educate our guests by leading 45-minute public tours of the Garden.  You will study and learn about Chinatown, Classical Chinese Gardens, history, culture, art and philosophy.  This role is excellent for developing public speaking and group facilitation skills.
Training and Required Commitment:  All New Docents are required to attend the full training session and be available to lead at least 2 tours per week for a minimum of 6 months.  All Docents/Cultural Interpreters are required to become Garden members – you will be asked to submit your membership form once you have confirmed your participation in Docent training. As this position requires a regular commitment is for 2 hours minimum for the first six months, this position is more suited for university students and up.

Garden membership offers many additional perks, including being able to vote in our Annual General Meeting (typically mid-April) to be involved in the Garden's future decisions, special discounted rates at the Garden's special events, and unique members-only events and deals throughout the year. Membership is only $25/year for volunteers, $35/year for regular adult membership (inquire for family or other rates!).
