Under Mayor Eric Adams, the crisis at Rikers has only gotten worse. The NYC Department of Correction is defined by dysfunction and scandal. Incarcerated people and staff continue to face an imminent risk of harm on a daily basis. It's clear: Rikers must be shut down, and until that day, urgent action is needed to save lives and improve conditions for people detained there and those who work there.
We support the call for the federal courts to appoint an independent receiver to take control of city jails and improve conditions for incarcerated people and for staff.
