Your Input on an Aksarben Dedicated Curling Facility
Aksarben Curling is exploring options to open its own dedicated curling facility, which would provide greatly expanded programming options and high quality curling ice. Current plans call for a 4-sheet facility designed with the option to expand sheets in the future.
We're calling on Aksarben members (and folks who haven't curled with us for a while) to share their input to help inform some items concerning facility design, your anticipated league and bonspiel participation, and potential pricing. We anticipate surveying members on other issues as they arise throughout the course of this project.
Your response will be kept confidential to the Dedicated Ice Committee, and will be aggregated with other responses.
How long have you been curling?
1 year or less
If it’s been awhile since you’ve been an Aksarben Curling member, when was the last time you were a member?
(optional) Write the approximate year. State n/a if you haven't been a member.
SEASON & LEAGUES
We want to know when our membership generally would like to begin and end the curling season, and how often they anticipate playing. Your responses here will help inform our operational budget planning.
In which month would you prefer to start curling?
I'd prefer year-round curling.
In which month would you prefer to stop curling?
I'd prefer year-round curling.
Presuming a Fall League runs from October through mid-December, how many fall leagues would you prefer to play in at the same time?
Presuming a Winter League runs from January through mid-March, how many winter leagues would you prefer to play in at the same time?
Presuming a Spring League runs from mid-March through April, how many spring leagues would you prefer to play in at the same time?
We do not anticipate offering curling in the summer in a dedicated facility. But, if curling was offered year-round, how likely would you play in the summer? (May through August)

COST PER GAME
We're developing multi-year operating budgets to examine what is financially feasible for a new facility. We want to balance keeping curling accessible and affordable, while also ensuring that membership and league fees cover the costs of operations, building maintenance, and paying down loans (which we will very likely have).
What is the *maximum* you would be willing to pay on a per game basis for leagues on dedicated ice? (this would be in addition to an annual membership fee)
$20 [current rate]
If you have additional thoughts/comments on the cost of leagues please share them here:
Having our own dedicated facility would permit us to host more tournaments throughout the year. That includes competitive events, social fun-spiels, and new events (eg, a 5-and-under for newer curlers, a women’s tournament, a youth tournament). Tournament prices range from $40-$50 for a mini-spiel (shorter and/or fewer games) to $80-$100 (more games, food and drinks provided). Typical bonspiels include a 3-game guarantee.
How many 3-game guarantee bonspiels would you anticipate playing in annually at Aksarben?
If you have additional thoughts/comments on bonspiels please share them here:
We have a few questions to help refine a draft curling facility floor plan. Your input will help us decide on some important tradeoffs regarding space usage and ensure that we're prioritizing members’ interests.
How important do you think it is that the facility has lockers available for use? (day use or rentable)
How likely would you be to RENT a locker during the curling season? (eg, $25-$100 per year)
If we have a locker room, would you prefer unisex locker rooms (which would allow families to more easily share a locker) or a separate men's and women's locker room?
Unisex locker room
Separate men's and women's locker rooms
Would you anticipate needing a private space to change clothes in the facility (besides just using the bathroom?
I’d like a place to change, but I’m fine with changing in a bathroom.
I’d like a place to change, and would prefer a private space separate from the bathroom (eg, individual changing room or separate mens/womens locker rooms).
I don’t plan to change at the facility.
If you have additional thoughts/comments on locker rooms or changing rooms in a new curling facility please share them here:
Many dedicated curling facilities have a bar or some sort of serving station for events. For adult beverages, we have two options: we either have a bar where we sell beer/alcohol or people could bring their own. Your response here will help us determine whether we should budget for bar revenue and expenses.
How important do you think it is that Aksarben’s curling facility includes a bar that serves beer/alcohol? (as opposed to bring your own drinks)
Regarding adult beverages, what would be your preference? (assuming you couldn’t both have a bar *and* bring your own beverages)
Have a bar
Bring your own beverages
