A. Clerical Assistant: works 5 hours/month (more during summer) to handle program registration spreadsheets, certificates, surveys, compile data sheets, create flyers, and handles email/phone communications. Ideal candidate is organized, detail-oriented, knows Excel and Word well, and has professional communication skills. Preferable if assistant can upload information to social media and website. Assistant will work for Jo Wu.
B. Biotech Lab Assistant: Helps prepare reagents, inventory, set up equipment and troubleshoot for FC molecular biology labs or biotechnology outreach program. Ideal candidate should be organized, resourceful, independent, be able to follow directions, but also can troubleshoot problems with lab reagents. Assistant will be supervised by Jo Wu, but will also interact with other biology faculty and staff.
C. Biotech Workshop Teaching Assistants: works 10 hours on one Saturday/month (September to May) to set up and teach Biotech Skills workshops (Saturdays) or occasional SWIFT Research project. Ideal candidate should have outstanding communication skills, calm patience dealing with younger students and teachers, friendly demeanor, attentive to lab safety, and be willing to serve as mentor and role model. Depending on new grant funding, TAs may be sent to regional high schools and middle schools to help assist in classrooms or outreach events-- these TAs would need to provide own transportation to off/campus sites. Assistants will work directly for Jo Wu. D. Science Summer Camp Teaching Assistants: Supervises a group of 4-8 junior, senior high school or college students from June 1-June 30 (Mondays - Thursdays 8am - 1pm). Must have excellent communication skills, initiative, great leadership, team-building abilities, good rapport with younger students but still maintain discipline in classroom. Ideal candidate has good hands-on techniques and prior knowledge about most of the camp topics (see ocbiotecheducation.org), but curriculum will be provided. Camp themes are Biotechnology, Genetics, CSI Forensic Sciences, Medical Exploration. Training will be scheduled in late May-early June. Assistants will work directly for Jo Wu.
