In English, some words must begin with a capital letter. The rules are fairly simple:
1) Capitalize the first word of a sentence.
* You should not capitalize other words in the sentence unless you have a reason!
2) Capitalize the pronoun "I". For example: He knew that I was her teacher.
* Do not confuse "I" with "it." "It" is only capitalized when it's the first word of a sentence.
3) Capitalize proper nouns (names). This is the most difficult rule, but basically, try to capitalize any noun that looks like a name. This includes names of people, cities, countries, organizations, languages, religions, nationalities, holidays, months, days of the week, planets, and more.
Example: The Tama River is a river in Tokyo.
Notice that the first use of river is capitalized. That's because it's part of the name, Tama River. Tokyo is capitalized because it's the name of the city.
4) Capitalize titles, such as book titles, movie titles and song titles.
* Sometimes small words, like to or a or of are not capitalized in titles. Example, I read the book, A Tale of Two Cities. Notice that in this case, the a is capitalized because it's the first word of the title, which is always capitalized. However, the of is not capitalized.
One of the words (only 1!) in each sentence below has a capitalization error. Write the word correctly in the box. Be sure to spell the word correctly, or the answer will be marked wrong.
