China's denial of universal suffrage to Hong Kong should serve as a big warning sign to the world, and especially to Taiwan. China has never been shy about its ambition to expand it's influence and territory. As its global presence and involvement are increasing, its values of dictatorship, oppression and dishonesty should be checked.
Martin Niemöller once wrote:
First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Socialist.
Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.
Civil disobedience is both justifiable and inevitable against a political power that refuses to acknowledge, rather than oppose, public will. As the students in Hong Kong are expressing their discontentment toward the Standing Committee’s proposal by going on strike, let us voice our support by signing this open letter and join the Yellow Ribbon Campaign on September 27th, 2014, initiated by the Civil Human Rights Front of Hong Kong to wear a yellow ribbon to show support for the students on strike and together defend the most fundamental value, democracy.
