Services Not Sweeps Petition
I support housing solutions for unhoused residents in LA City and County and increased public health resources for people living on our streets. Homelessness must be addressed with housing and health-based resources over a sustained period of time instead of costly, cruel, counter-productive criminalization efforts.

Because of this, I strongly oppose the LA County Board of Supervisors recent decision to join in the challenge of Martin vs Boise, a legal case that recognized any effort to criminalize sleeping in public spaces where alternative housing is unavailable would violate the US Constitution’s 8th Amendment prohibition against, “cruel and unusual punishment.”

The Board of Supervisors – particularly Supervisors Ridley-Thomas, Hahn and Barger who led the 3-2 vote – should not support challenges of people’s civil rights at any time, especially by appealing to Trump appointees on the Supreme Court.

I also strongly oppose the LA City Council’s recent efforts to revise LA Municipal Code 41.18 in a manner that would, in practice, make the existence of homeless people illegal in almost the entire City, encourage hate and violence, and further criminalize people who have no alternatives.

I call on the City and County elected officials to focus on housing and health-based solutions and end or reverse any and all criminalization efforts.
