2018 SJS Participant Registration Form
Thank you for expressing interest in submitting a workshop proposal and/or registering to attend the Second Annual Social Justice Symposium. This Student Diversity & Multicultural Affairs-led conference will be held on March, 17th 2018 from 10:00am-5:00pm in Sr. Jean Schmidt Damen Student Center, Multipurpose room (2nd floor) on Loyola University Chicago's (LUC) Lakeshore campus. The symposium aims to provide workshops, performances, and educational sessions that are focused on the experience of various social identities across higher education. Though geared toward Loyola undergraduate/graduate students, faculty, and staff, we invite folks from other universities (students, faculty, and staff) and non-collegiate community members to present!
SJS Theme & Learning Outcomes
This year's theme "Up-rooting Hegemony: Disrupting Dominant Culture," will bring together a multitude of community members who are passionate about justice and equally committed to doing the self-work that in turn transforms communities. In the words of Audre Lorde: "In order to perpetuate itself, every oppression must corrupt or distort those various sources of power within the culture of the oppressed that can provide energy for change." By participating in this one-day symposium, attendees will acquire the skills to define hegemony, identify hegemonic structures, reflect on their complicity in hegemony, and discover methods to actively work against dominant ideologies. In coming together, the SJS committee hopes that individuals will leave feeling empowered, re-committed, and called to enact change.

By participating in the SJS, participants will…

1) Define hegemony in their own words and identify the presence of hegemonic culture in their lives.
3) Reflect on their complicity in perpetuating hegemony.
3) Develop two strategies to actively disrupt hegemonic culture.
