Te Karanga Ki Ngā Taniwha at Te Whare Hēra
Wellington based artist, Linda Lee (Ngāti Raukawa, Ngāti Huia, Ngāti Kuri, Te Aupōuri, Te Rarawa) has been granted the Te Whare Hēra Artist Residency from 3 - 24 August 2023, for Te Karanga Ki Ngā Taniwha. 

The  free to the public programme  will be open between 15-22 August, featuring hīkoi, wānanga, reading groups and more, and will explore Linda’s work delving into pūrākau, with practitioners providing introductions to raranga, rongoā, whakairo, taonga puoro and more.

Koha jar onsite at all times.

Location unless otherwise stated: 1 Clyde Quay Wharf, Wellington.
Walk right to the very end of the Marina until you can see the fishermen at the end of the jetty then turn around 180 degrees. It's the very last unit overlooking the end of the jetty.

Raranga Wānanga
Join Franklyn Topia and Linda Lee for an introduction to raranga, weaving with harakeke, outside of their usual space at Ōtari Wilton’s Bush. We’ll discuss basic tikanga and you can see what the artist/s have been creating during the residency in various stages of completion. You will walk away with your own small woven taonga at the end of the wānanga.

*If you come to more than one class, you will develop skills, progress and make different objects.

Join artist Holli McEntegart for a kōrero about creating at the intersection of art and motherhood and the fluidity that’s required to maintain your creative identity whilst raising a family.

Artist, Linda Lee will be demonstrating how to make muka pito.

Te Whare Waka Walking Tour

Join us on an all expenses paid Te Wharewaka Walking Tour.

Starting at the Te Aro Pā, on the Walking Tour, you will discover intriguing secrets about the city. View the archaeological remains of a whareponga (house) at the Pā site, then move on to see Te Whanganui-a-Tara, Wellington Harbour. The area where Te Raukura - Te Wharewaka o Pōneke is located was harbour frontage to Te Aro Pā. 

Hear stories about the two taniwha (mythological beings) in the harbour retold, find out about environmental impacts for Māori in today’s urban landscape and learn other fascinating facts about Māori culture in Wellington.
