THEME: This season's theme is "Remembering Red Hill: Bernal's Poltical Voice." Until the 1906 earthquake, Bernal remained largely undeveloped, when refugees from the city moved into earthquake shacks on Precita Park. During World War II, the area saw another population surge. The new arrivals included many African-American families who worked at the nearby San Francisco Naval Shipyard at Hunters Point. During the Vietnam War, the neighborhood was known as "Red Hill" for the anti-war activists in shared households and collectives who moved in among the working-class families. By the 1990s, Bernal's pleasant microclimate, small houses and freeway access to the peninsula and Silicon Valley led to a third wave of migration. Despite the changing demographic, Bernal retains its reputation as an activist community.
SUBMISSIONS CRITERIA AND PROCESS: Our Submissions & Selection Committee reviews all entries, selects accepted submissions and votes on two awards among all entries: "Best of Bernal" and "Spirit of Bernal." All shown films/videos are eligible for the "Audience Award," voted on by audience members. Filmmakers will be notified by the second week of August, 2017, if their selection will screen in this season's schedule. Films are judged on their production values, themes, intended audience, length and association with Bernal (not a requirement for selection)
