The RCIA is the officially recognised process by which new members are introduced and welcomed into membership of the Catholic Church and which has its origins in the practice of the early Christian communities. It is a process of enquiry and instruction a journey of faith along which the individual travels at his or her own pace, but never alone. The distinguishing feature of the RCIA is that it is community centered.
Enquirers are accompanied and supported on their journey by sponsors (faith companions/ friends of faith), team members and other representatives of the Christian community. At various stages on this journey, when enquirers are ready and personally wish to do so, they go through certain rites or ceremonies in the presence of the whole community. culminating in the reception of the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist, as they are joyously received into full membership of the community.
