Overview: This is an introductory session for basic sand tray and sand play knowledge. Counselors will gain insight on the foundation components on what sand tray/play are, as well as leave with knowledge on which to offer clients this healing opportunity.

Day One: Play Therapy in the Sand Tray: Theory and practice for beginners

Objectives: Summarize the origin and theory of using sandtray in play therapy; Explain the differences between sandtray play therapy and SandPlay®; List categories from which to select miniatures to use in sandtray play therapy; Overview of theories that are tied in to play therapy in a sand tray; Identify common themes play therapy will explore in the sandtray process; and experiential self exploration for counselor through one play therapy experiential direct technique to introduce day two hands on approach model of learning.

Day Two: A Beginners Approach to Moving Your Play Therapy into the Sand Tray: Experiential counselor learning where theory and practice collide

Objectives: Identify best play therapy practices for when to use sand tray; Identify best play therapy practices for using sand play; Gain insight on to document play therapy in sand tray effectively in a clinical note; Counselor experiential through self-exploring non-directive; Counselor experiential learning through directive play therapy techniques for sand tray; and Learn how to utilizing play therapy in a sand tray for clients from adolescence to adulthood.

About the Presenter: Mindi is the Assistant Clinical Director at Garrett Counseling and is a License Professional Counselor (#3305) and a Board Certified Counselor. She has earned her Bachelor’s of social work, Master’s degree in Community Agency Counseling, and Education Specialist in Counseling from Jacksonville State University. Mindi is a member of Children’s Policy Council, serves on the Leadership Council for Alabama Counseling Association – Chapter V, ALSCA Advocacy Coordinator, serves on the JSU Counselor Education Advisory Council and is a member of NBCC. Mindi is certified as a Global Career Development Facilitator and provides career counseling. She has experience presenting on local, state, and national level and will be traveling in January to present in Japan on play therapy.
