Grass Lake Restoration Team
If you are interested in joining the Grass Lake Restoration Team (Kenny neighborhood, Minneapolis), please fill out this form.

We'll send out information about various opportunities to engage according to your preferences (see options below).

The GLRT has been hosting buckthorn removal events since 2024 to regain space overtaken by this very assertive species on Grass Lake, a 27 acre urban wetland. The goal is to replace the buckthorn thickets with native plants and shrubs, and specifically a garden on the southeast shore during the 2026 growing season.

We have received a grant from the Garden Club of Minneapolis to help fund the purchase of native plants during the summer of 2026, and we'll be holding a series of planting events in addition to our ongoing series of buckthorn removal events.

The overarching goal is to learn how to improve, maintain, and expand the natural habitat.

Upcoming events (all free and meet at the fenced garden on the southeast shore - please register so we know how many supplies to bring to each event):
  • Buckthorn Bust, Sat, Oct 10, 2026 at 1-3pm, Register
  • Buckthorn Bust, Sat, Nov 14, 2026 at 1-3pm, Register

✂️ Buckthorn Busts (Working in small groups to cut, haul, and apply water-safe herbicide to buckthorn around the shores of Grass Lake. These events take place in the fall when buckthorn is most visible against other vegetation.)

🌿 Garden Tending (Activities like planting, weeding, and winter-sowing plants for the native plant gardens, including the new southeast garden and "Bob's Garden" on the north end.)

📱 iNaturalist (Documenting plants and wildlife around the shores of Grass Lake using the iNaturalist app, either as an individual or at group events like a BioBlitz)

🖌️ Arts & Crafts Workshops (activities like making ink out of buckthorn berries or plant pressings in homemade clay, etc.)

ℹ️ Stay Informed (Not sure if you'd like to participate, but you'd like to receive information about the work unfolding on the shores of Grass Lake. We'll aim for a quarterly email update.)
