In this Survey we want to hear from YOU, the MUNACA union membership: your thoughts on the cuts and austerity that the McGill executive is imposing. We want you to inform your union how this will affect your workload, your health and your life!

All respondent names/emails will remain ANONYMOUS. Results will be publicized to highlight the Workers' perspective on what Job Cuts and Austerity actually mean.

The McGill Executive announced cuts of 100 positions within the next month and up to 500 in 2025, following a year-long hiring freeze.

If one of your colleagues was let go, how well do you think you would cope with the increased workload they would leave behind?

1 - I would not be affected

How would this affect your mental health?

Given McGill's projected $45 million deficit, do you think hiring NousGroup consulting for $372,500 to advise the Executive on university management is justified?

1 - Why shouldn't they hire a consulting group to do the job they earn over 400,000$ a year to do?

2 - I’m unsure whether McGill should spend 372,000$ on consulting group

3 - I'm hesitant of McGill spending 372,000$ on an outside consulting group

4 - They should be cutting spending on contractors, not increasing it

5 - The workers and students know how to run a University NOT a Consulting group

McGill is creating a Horizon department to handle employee benchmarking and reorganizations. They are hiring a director with a salary between $124,800 and $195,000. The department's allocated salary mass will be between $550,000 and $750,000.

1 - Hiring a new director in a budget deficit is a financially sound decision

2 - I’m unsure whether this is a financially prudent decision

3 - Spending more money to implement budget cuts does not seem financially sound

4 - I am against increased spending to hire a director of 'budget cuts'

5 - I am strongly against; this seems like a mismanagement of funds

In the context of a budgetary deficit, should the McGill Executive bear responsibility and take a corresponding cut to their compensation, as Directors of University operations?

What percentage increase or decrease in your senior administrator's total compensation (salary, bonuses, benefits, "golden parachutes") do you believe would be a fair reflection of the current budget crisis, and the resulting potential layoffs and service cuts? ex. Deep Saini's annual salary of 541,724$

1 - Exec compensation increase of 1-3 %

2 - Exec compensation increase of 3-6%

3 - Exec compensation decrease of 1- 3 %

4 - Exec compensation decrease of 3 - 6%

5 - Exec compensation decrease of 50 %

In 2019, while serving as Vice Chancellor at Canberra University, Deep Saini encouraged university support staff to donate $20 a week from their paychecks to university scholarships.

He said, "Let's say a cup of coffee costs us $4 each and we decide that we're going to give one cup of coffee per day to support our students ... imagine the impact of that."

How many cups of coffee do you think our Senior Administration should donate to support McGill frontline staff?

None - The Senior Admin need all the coffee they can get to cut our jobs

5 cups a day - This is only a mere 20$ a day for Senior admin

30 cups a day - MUNACA workers haven't received a raise in a year!

100 cups a day - Workers and Students need all the help they can get with inflation
