What is your history with The Generator? How long have you been coming to The Generator? What was your past participation at The Generator? *
Please note that we do not pick projects or residents based on seniority. We are looking for people and projects that are compelling and audacious. The Generator is here as a foundation for people to attempt to do something greate and we would like to support as many great ideas and creators as possible.
Your answer
Physical description -- Please describe what you plan to create. *
Please do your best to communicate clearly and accurately about what you would like to create.
Your answer
How much space do you need? *
Consider the size of your piece, the area around it you'll need and where and how you will be storing your ACTIVE materials.
Your answer
Philosophical description of your project, art, or creation. Please take some time to describe why you are creating what you are creating. We understand that not everything being built in The Generator is art. We would like to learn what inspires you to create and what drives that creation forward. *
Your answer
What would you like to achieve personally upon completion of your project or Artist Residency? *
Your answer
What tools and resources will you use or need access to? *
You will need to schedule time with one of our many shop leads and be thoroughly checked out on any tool you use. Keep in mind that being checked out on tools does not give you clearance to check out others, anyone joining your project must go through our shop leads as well (demonstration of clear, concise understanding of equipment safety and use will earn you an invitation to become a shop lead). You will need to know specifics of our equipment so that when purchasing blades/bits/consumables you are not damaging equipment or yourself with the wrong parts. You will be expected to replace/repair any damaged tools. Once you are cleared to use our tools and equipment you will need to request shop time on our shop calendars. This will require you to plan your project work time and work with other projects, this will help prevent unsafe situations in our shops and ensure you have access to the tools you need when you need them. Do not lolly gag or be distracted, when your time is up the shops need to be clean and clear of your project materials. ANY PROJECT MATERIALS left in common areas will be discarded in the quickest and most efficient way we see fit.
Required
What is the budget for your project? *
Please take the time to consider how much your project will cost. If you are applying for a residency please fill in your 6 month average costs for the projects you plan to work on.
Your answer
How do you plan to fund your project? How do you plan to complete your project if you don’t reach your funding goals? Do you have levels of completion to ensure that you can finish your project regardless of funding? *
We understand that Resident Artists generally have different funding needs than big projects. If you plan to self fund your work please state that below.
Your answer
Will you be using volunteers, friends or the general public in your project? If so, how will they help/learn/teach while working on your project? *
A key component of participating at The Generator is skill sharing and we have a tendancy to approve projects that help engage more people in the act of creation.
Your answer
Why do you want to create your project in The Generator? *
Your answer
Where will your project go after completion? *
Please know that we do not store any projects at The Generator. Your resident space is meant for active projects and you are not allowed to collect or store supplies or completed projects for more than 6 months at a time. Do you have a back up plan for storing your project after completion? Yes
Your answer
Are you willing to regularly help clean the bathrooms, kitchen and workshops? *
The Generator is maintained by our volunteers and we expect that both Projects and Residents will give back and help maintain the space on a regular recurring basis. Resident artists and long term projects will be required to schedule and complete regular bathroom, kitchen and workshop cleaning tasks.
Required
What is your Leave no trace plan? *
We require that all projects leave The Generator better than they found it. As such it is required that everyone take the time to fully clean up after their project. Building is a naturally dirty process, saw dust travels across the entire building, and we expect that everyone will take the time to not only clean up after their own projects but also help with general cleaning around the space. What is your plan to make this happen? The Generator does appreciate donations of material and tools so long as they are of good working order and viable in the world today, please keep this in mind when donating to The Generator.
Your answer
How will your project help further the mission of The Generator? *
How it works: The Generator is built to be a collection of people, talents and tools. We share our skills, knowledge and resources to help each other build our ideas. At the individual level we are providing a large collection of skills and resources to help you create. In exchange we hope to encourage you to share your skills and resources with the larger community. It’s a bit like a school where everyone is both a student and a teacher. Artists teach carpenters how to paint. Carpenters teach makers how to build. And makers teach artist how to tinker. For more on our mission go to http://www.therenogenerator.com
Your answer
As a volunteer-driven space we expect everyone who participates at The Generator to give back and help maintain the space. How exactly do you plan to give back and help improve the space? *
As a baseline we suggest that everyone volunteer to clean the bathrooms, shops and greater facility once a month. In addition we encourage everyone to offer classes and workshops, create instructional videos and tutorials and give back directly to The Generator. We will use your answer to this question to create performance metrics for your project and/or residency. For example, if you would like to hold 6 woodworking classes we will expect you to set dates for the classes and provide a sign in sheet to confirm that the classes were provided as promised.
Your answer
What do you plan to donate back to the space when your project or residency is completed? *
The Generator is sustained by donations and we expect that all participants will take the initiative to donate tools, resources and money to The Generator. We ask that all large projects donate all the tools purchased for the project back to The Generator. By doing this the library of available tools will grow giving a broader community access to tools and keeping project budgets low.

Please email us a short 1-2 minute video describing what you like about The Generator and how you plan to improve your life and the world around you through your participation at The Generator. *
This does not need to be a complicated performance. We are simply looking for simple video testimonies that we can place on The Generator’s website. Please email a link to the file to rac@therenogenerator.com. If you are not comfortable on video that is ok too :).
