Compassion 2020 is a statewide program open to eligible high school students who are motivated to inspire compassion in their communities, develop their leadership skills, and learn about new cultures.
Students selected for the program as Compassion Scholars will travel to Dharamsala, India this November with a delegation of community leaders from Washington state to visit sites of cultural and historical interest, culminating in a 90-minute delegation meeting with the Dalai Lama. The meeting will consist of a facilitated discussion on the topic of cultivating compassion in the next generation and will be publicly broadcast. Students on the delegation may have the opportunity to personally ask the Dalai Lama a question related to the central discussion topic. Following the trip, students are expected to carry on the effort to promote compassionate leadership in each of their communities.
Up to 5 students will be selected to participate in the program, with airfare and lodging expenses sponsored by the Association of Washington Generals. Students will be selected based on the thoughtfulness and thoroughness of their responses to the application essay questions and the strength of their character references.
The delegation will comprise up to 20 community leaders working to promote compassion throughout the state. One of the delegation members will be a chaperone whose sole responsibility will be ensuring the well-being and safety of the student delegates.
Following the trip to India, the Association of Washington Generals will continue to serve as a resource to the selected students to support the development of their compassion-based work, as well as to promote their leadership development goals generally.
