ACE Outreach Awards

One award of up to $2500 for supporting activities to translate cultural evolution research for a non-academic audience or students outside of the field of cultural evolution. This can include activities such as

  • traveling to study communities to disseminate research findings;
  • translating a book or paper to another language;
  • creating a professional video or film of a research project;
  • developing dissemination materials;
  • organizing a high-school student event hosting a meeting with policy makers
  • preparing webinars, course materials, or workshops for undergraduate students

Applications must be received by March 20, 2023 AoE to be considered.


1. Proposed activity should be related to translating research in the field of cultural evolution to a broader audience.

2. Applicants may be individuals conducting research within the field of cultural evolution, OR they may be non-academics who are professionally situated to develop dissemination materials/translate research findings within the field to a broader audience (e.g. film maker, high-school teacher, web developer, professional translator, member from the participant community in which study was conducted, etc).

3. Applicant must be current dues paying members of CES. You can renew your membership here. If you are unsure of your membership expiration date, please contact our membership secretary Tim Waring at 


Applications will be reviewed by at least 2 individuals who are in the field of cultural evolution, and may be drawn from the CES executive committee, or a review committee comprised of researchers within the field.

Applications will be scored on the basis of:
  • Impact the outreach activity will have in translating cultural evolution research to a broader audience.
  • Feasibility of proposed activity and qualifications of the applicant to implement the activity/product.
  • Funds should be expended within 1 year of receiving them. 
  • Within 18 months of receiving the funds, you will be asked to communicate to CES on how the funds were used, what outreach activities took place, and preliminary indicators of impact.
  • You should acknowledge funding from the CES ACE Grant in publications arising from this work. 

NOTE: If multiple individuals are involved in the project, only one individual should submit the application, and list collaborators under the Feasibility/Qualifications question.
