The Vancouver Dyke March & Festival is on July 30, 2022!
*** 2022 Vancouver Dyke March Volunteer Info ***
Without our volunteers, we could not put on this event. We greatly appreciate everyone who applies to volunteer, whether you come for the whole day or just 3-4 hours.
Volunteers must attend a 2-hour training session (by video-conference) in advance of the March. Current available dates for the volunteer training session are: (1) Sunday, June 26, 2022, @ 11:00am-1:00pm; or (2) Tuesday, July 12, 2022 @ 5:30-7:30pm. Depending on the circumstances as we approach this year's March, we may be able to arrange a further volunteer training date. If you have volunteered for the March in the past, we may exempt you from this training session.
Volunteer shifts and roles will be assigned by July 24, 2022, and will be sent out to all volunteers by email.
On the day of the March, the March begins gathering in McSpadden Park at 11 AM, where our banner for the year is created. The March leaves McSpadden Park at 12 PM (noon) and heads down Commercial Drive to end at Grandview Park for the Festival. The Festival takes place in Grandview Park from about 1 PM to 5 PM. The Festival involves performances from various artists, features queer-friendly vendors, and creates a space to gather with friends, family, and the community. Tear down at Grandview Park takes place from 5 PM to 6 PM.
Volunteers are expected to firmly commit to attending the Vancouver Dyke March and Festival on July 30, 2022, for their volunteer shift. If you are unexpectedly unable to attend, please give us as much notice as possible, so that we can try to replace you.
*** Important Context ***
In the years leading up to the pandemic, a coordinated trans-exclusionary group attended in-person at our march. Our community has worked hard to make it clear that transphobic ideology is unwelcome at our event. However, it is possible this group may attempt to intrude again this year. Other hate groups, such as racist, MRA, and right-wing groups, have attended or have threatened to attend our march in the past.
In most years, the Vancouver Dyke March takes place on a hot and sunny day. We have shade tents available, as well as water and light snacks, but there will be a number of volunteer tasks for both the March and Festival that involve being outside in the weather.
The 2022 Vancouver Dyke March and Festival will be subject to any COVID-19 rules in effect on July 30, 2022.
Our volunteers are an important part of helping to make our events safer and more welcoming for those who attend, but please consider the possible presence of hate groups and the current pandemic circumstances when choosing whether to volunteer with us this year, and please be attentive to your own needs and capacity.
