pause // play
pause // play is a collaborative art project by a group of creatives from various disciplines, exploring and expressing their virtual experiences of the past 1.5 pandemic years. Coming together as Unit B under the Seni Tiga Lab program by KongsiKL, they have never met each other physically since the beginning of the project in June, when Malaysia was still under the Movement Control Order 3.0. It became a rare opportunity for them to react to a local and global situation, by adapting to new ways to create, collaborate and express through weekly discussions and activities. The virtual event was first presented on 8-9 October 2021.

Seni Tiga Lab: Unit B
Seni Tiga (three arts in Bahasa Malaysia) is an on-going project created in 2019 as a platform for multidisciplinary collaborative performance. The three art forms are movement, visual and sound.

In 2021, instead of developing live performances, the platform continues in the form of a laboratory - a collaboration that is process-driven rather than product-oriented - to stimulate, nourish and elevate creative practice of participants through mutual artistic exchange with a mentor. The platform hopes to be a part of the artistic journey of art makers during this uncertain period and wishes to participate in the search for new ways to create, present and consume arts.

Gathered by the interest of defining space, Unit B was formed in response to an open call in April 2021. The four components that made up the unit are: Front Stage members, Backbone members, a mentor and the production team.

Upon commencement on 6 June 2021, the group had weekly meetings to express in their own ways while exploring sounds, movements and images together along the way.

KongsiKL
--- Kongsi (share / company) --- Kilang Lama (old factory) --- Klang Lama (our location) --- Kuala Lumpur (our city) ---

KongsiKL is a not-for-profit organisation based in a 10,000sqft warehouse at Old Klang Road, Kuala Lumpur. Sitting side by side, Old Klang Road and the Klang River are major arteries of the city that contributed tremendously in its growth for close to two centuries. ย
ย
The warehouse that used to be a VOLVO workshop and later a stainless steel factory is an art space today - housing a loose coalition that expands and shrinks from time to time to run artistic and cultural projects. KongsiKL is also an experiment - for the property owner who entrusted the space to the coalition, as well as for the group of artists, academics and designers who have a vision of sharing resources in running programs and a space.
ย
Since its establishment in 2017, KongsiKLโ€™s programs have been rather site-specific, experimental and multidisciplinary in response to its capacity and limitations. The space remains bare to retain its properties of being neutral, versatile and communal.
