If you are an interested parent, and would like for your school to take part in kNOw Waste please forward this form to your school's administrators and teachers.

This program and the 6 week curriculum we've created are specifically designed for your 5th grade students and will be scheduled to run once weekly for the duration, during your regular school hours for 1 hour sessions with each participating class.

Our kNOw Waste unit gives students an opportunity to examine the complex issue of Food Waste and to understand the depth and breadth of the issue in the United States. Students learn the facts of food waste on a national scale, where it is occurring and current solutions to the issue through expository text, key vocabulary, infographics, video clips, and Public Service Announcements. Class discussion, student writing, and targeted group activity are integrated throughout the unit to deepen and expand their understanding. From this, each student will apply his/her learning by writing an essay on Food Waste and its impact. Also, groups will develop a Public Service Announcement (PSA) on one issue of Food Waste demonstrating an understanding of the problem and identifying a solution.

This unit was designed to work with your grade level requirements and was developed using the California Common Core Standards. The intention of the essay is for it to be integrated into your expository writing program. Grade level rubrics were developed to support the grading of the two final assessments: the essay and the PSA if you should choose to use them.
