Habitat for Humanity of Metro Denver: Youth United Steering Committee Application: 2016-2017

Youth United is a Habitat for Humanity International organization that engages youth with Habitat’s mission of building decent, safe and affordable homes. The Metro Denver Youth United Steering Committee is comprised of twenty members ranging in age from 16 to 20. Members organize volunteer opportunities, raise funds to sponsor a home, and engage youth of all ages with Habitat’s mission.

    Youth United Membership Expectations

    Membership on the Habitat Metro Denver Steering Committee requires regular attendance at meetings, events, and service projects outside of regularly scheduled meetings. You must be able to make this commitment. Details of member expectations are included in this application. You must read through these expectations and indicate that you are aware of and understand the expectations of membership. You and your parent/guardian must electronically sign the expectations agreement and include it with your application in order to be considered for membership.

    Term Limits

    The Youth United Steering Committee shall consist of 20 members 16 years of age or older currently attending high school. The program runs from late August 2016 - May 2017. Members who are selected as juniors or sophomores may reapply to serve a second or third term, respectively. The Committee will have 3 officers: chair, vice chair, and secretary. Officers will be elected at the beginning of the term. All members are eligible to run for office.

    Subcommittees

    All Steering Committee members are required to serve on 1 of 3 subcommittees (please scroll down for subcommittee details): • Event Coordination Subcommittee • Youth Engagement Subcommittee • Advocacy Subcommittee

    Meetings

    Steering Committee meetings will take place on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of each month from 7pm-8pm at the Habitat for Humanity of Metro Denver Office, 3245 Eliot St., Denver, CO 80211.

    Important Dates

    1. August retreat -- Thursday, August 25, 2016 from 7pm – 8pm. 2. Youth United Build Day -- Saturday, September 10th from 9am - 4:30pm at location TBD

    Events

    Steering Committee members are required to participate in a total of 4 events per year. These events include: 1. Event planned by subcommittee on which member serves (required) 2. ReStore volunteer day 3. Habitat build or critical home repair volunteer day 4. Event planned by other subcommittee group 5. Denver City Council Meeting (topics: Neighborhoods and Planning, Safety & Wellbeing, Land Use, Infrastructure) 6. Sit in on a college class discussing economic development and community planning

    Attendance Policy

    1. Each Steering Committee member is allowed 3 meeting absences. 2. Any more than 3 absences will result in a meeting with the Staff Liaison and possible termination of membership. 3. Any member unable to attend a meeting or an event shall notify the staff liaison by 5:00 p.m. the day preceding the meeting. 4. Steering Committee members who do not meet attendance requirements for meetings and/or for events are ineligible to be nominated as an officer in future terms.

    Drug and Alcohol Policy

    Habitat for Humanity Metro Denver is a drug and alcohol free environment. Any use of such substances during any Youth United event will not be tolerated.

    Membership Agreement Form

    The following are the expectations of members who are selected to serve on the Youth United Steering Committee. If you cannot meet these expectations, you will not be considered for membership on the Steering Committee. Please read each expectation below and sign at the bottom of the form. ____As a member of the Steering Committee I will serve for the entirety of my term ____I have read through and understand the Steering Committee attendance policy ____I understand that all meetings will be held at the Habitat Metro Denver office ____I understand that events and volunteer opportunities may be held outside of the office ____I will arrange transportation for myself to all meetings and events ____I will attend twice monthly Committee meetings ____I will attend the August retreat ____I will attend the Youth United Build Day in September ____I will serve on one of three subcommittees ____I will attend the event organized by my subcommittee ____I will attend a total of 4 events during my term ____I will communicate with the Staff Liaison if I am unable to attend a meeting or event ____I will check my email regularly and respond to emails when asked ____I understand that Habitat for Humanity is a drug and alcohol free environment ____ I will adhere to the expectations of the Steering Committee and uphold these standards in my personal conduct while at Committee meetings or events and when representing Youth United in social situations ____I understand that as a member of the Steering Committee I represent Habitat for Humanity of Metro Denver, Habitat for Humanity International, and Youth United.

    Subcommittee Choice Form

    Steering Committee members will not only serve as part of a 20-member team, but they will also serve on a subcommittee of their choosing. Please read the subcommittee descriptions below and indicate your 1st, 2nd, and 3rd choice preference. The Staff Liaison will try to accommodate your first choice when possible.
