This semester is a critical time for SENS-UAW. Trump’s election has added extra urgency to our fight for student worker’s rights. Trump’s appointees to the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) will create a hostile environment for workers and unions. We have been fighting for our union for more than two years, and in light of this new challenge we are committed to winning our union this semester even if the New School tries to hide behind the anti-labor policies of Trump’s appointees.

At the end of last year we delivered a letter signed by many of our colleagues to President Van Zandt informing him that if he continues to refuse to recognize our union and join us at the bargaining table we will take steps toward holding a strike authorization vote. If need be, we are willing to strike for our right to unionize. Mere days after we delivered our demands the NLRB sent our petition to the regional NLRB branch in Manhattan. This is a crucial step and a victory for us, but it is not enough. Given the urgency of the situation we must continue to pressure both the New School administration and the NLRB to immediately recognize our status as a union before Trump has a chance to pack the NLRB against us. We cannot allow President Van Zandt to profit from Trump’s regressive labor policies!

We will wait no longer. We the undersigned are committed to voting YES for SENS-UAW in an NLRB election and, if the New School continues to delay, authorizing a strike.
