Hello all UCLA math (pre-)majors/minors!
We are the Undergraduate Math Council at UCLA, a group of undergrads in the Math Department that aims to (1) serve as a form of communication between math students and the department, (2) create a more inclusive space, and (3) make students of all identities feel welcome. The 2021-2022 school year was our first year as an official student organization: we started creating various resources for students (such as course maps and career planning tips), hosting events (such as an EDI speaker series), and expanding our social media.
In every single team and initiative, the most crucial aspect of our council is inclusivity. STEM, and higher education at large, has traditionally excluded people from marginalized communities, and a primary goal of the council is to address this and foster more inclusivity within the UCLA Math Department. For this reason, students from underrepresented communities (BIPOC, low-income, LGBTQ+, undocumented, foster youth, veterans, students with dependents, etc.) are particularly encouraged to apply. We want all voices to be heard. Additionally, no experience is needed to apply! All we want to see is passion; everything else can be taught. :)
*Please note that you must be an undergraduate student with some form of a math major/pre-major/minor in order to apply.
