The YOVASO Staff is now accepting applications for the 2018-2019 YOVASO Youth Advisory Council. The application includes three parts; personal information, one letter of recommendation, and essay questions. Applications are due by August 14, 2018. If you have any concerns meeting this deadline because of your school start date, please contact us.

Purpose of the YOVASO Youth Advisory Council:

The YOVASO Youth Advisory Council is a group of students who want to take a leadership role with YOVASO by speaking out and saving lives. These students are leaders within their high schools and are empowered by YOVASO to make a large-scale impact in their schools, communities, and throughout the Commonwealth. The staff at YOVASO created the council to keep YOVASO youth oriented and youth-led. As youth advisors, the members play a vital role in the mission of YOVASO.

Members of the YOVASO Youth Advisory Council:

The council will consist of members from different high schools in Virginia. Members selected will serve for one year and may reapply yearly. These students must be leaders with strong ideas, the ability to solve problems and think strategically.

Duties of the YOVASO Youth Advisory Council:

- The YOVASO Youth Advisory Council will meet as a whole monthly --- either in-person, or via online conference call. If a council member can not uphold these responsibilities, he/she must notify Casey Taylor to determine what action needs to take place.
- Council members will brainstorm new ideas for YOVASO through committees. Members will be broken into smaller groups dedicated to various tasks, to help keep YOVASO fresh and help ensure that students stay excited and motivated to save lives. There will be a Retreat Planning Committee and a Program Development Committee. The Program Development Committee will focus on social media/marketing usage, grant ideas, campaign development and school outreach.
- Council members have the opportunity to participate in state and national highway safety conferences and other events that promote YOVASO at the local, state, and national level.
- Council members must act as positive role models in their schools and communities and uphold the values of YOVASO.
- Council members must actively participate in their school’s YOVASO or prevention club.
- Council members are required to help lead YOVASO campaigns and activities in their schools.
-Council members are REQUIRED to serve as youth leaders for the YOVASO Summer Leadership Retreat June 17-20, 2019 at James Madison University. Youth leaders are also required to arrive one day early on June 16 to help prepare for the week ahead. If you have something else planned for this time frame or there's a possibility something may come up, you need to notify Casey Taylor prior to applying and/or as early as possible. If selected to serve on the council despite the possibility of not being able to work the retreat, you will be REQUIRED to find a replacement who will be able to work the retreat and also attend the two-day Youth Leader Training in Blackstone, VA that will take place in April prior to the retreat.

Essay Questions
All questions must be answered and attached to application for consideration (max. 500 words).
YAC should be an opportunity for you to grow as a leader. Write a brief paragraph on what you hope to get out of your experience on the the YOVASO Youth Advisory Council, and a way you would challenge yourself to grow: *
Your answer
One of your greatest roles on YAC is to be at our meetings, whether they are online or in person. This is a team, but chances are you won’t see everyone in your day-to-day life, so there is a certain level of commitment to the time we do have together. Please tell us what activities you participate in throughout the year (including sports, musicals, teams, clubs, work), and how you will manage your extracurricular activities and being apart of a state-wide leadership council? *
Your answer
As said before, YAC is all about working together to see a change in not just your schools and communities but all over Virginia. However, things don’t always work out and teams don’t always get along. Say there’s been a miscommunication between you and another member of YAC, and it ended up being over a very important job. Tell us how would you handle it? You can even give one example of a time where you were working within a team, and there was conflict. *
Your answer
YAC works on projects in two categories: Retreat Planning and Program Development (this includes campaign planning, social media outreach). What ideas do you have to help YOVASO grow in both of these areas? If you had the choice, which category would you like to work with and what skills do you have that would be beneficial to help YOVASO grow in this area? *
Your answer
Student and Parent Signature
Serving on the Youth Advisory Council is a commitment to the YOVASO Program and its mission of preventing motor vehicle crashes, injuries, and fatalities among young drivers in Virginia. I have read over the purpose and responsibilities and am interested in becoming a youth traffic safety advocate for Virginia and serving on the council. If selected for this honor, I will take this responsibility seriously and make a committed effort to attend all meetings and actively participate in all activities.
