Job Description – The Graduate Teaching Assistant position requires a total commitment of 20 hours per week, and all graduate assistants are expected to provide a certain level of availability and flexibility within their schedules. Responsibilities will extend past the scope of classroom teaching to include involvement in ATP events and student mentoring. Please see below for further details.
1. Teaching • Instruct two sections of NAU 120 in Fall and up to three sections of NAU 130 in Spring. • Implement provided curriculum to foster an engaging and learning centered environment. • Record attendance, maintains grade rosters, and provides detailed documentation of student progress. • Hold weekly office hours (between 2 and 3 hours per week).
2. Mentorship • Aide in the supervision of 4-6 undergraduate peer coaches. • Provide guidance, support, and professional development to peer coaches. • Coordinate and facilitate weekly staff meetings with coaches to discuss student progress, concerns, and course-related issues. • Assist with new peer coach selection for the following academic year (Fall). • Assist with new peer coaching training (Spring).
3. Reporting and Events • Provide weekly information to ATP staff to include: attendance, lesson plan feedback, and student concerns • Send weekly GPS notifications to all students. • Participate and support ATP events that occur on evening and weekends. Typically two to three per semester. • Input grading information into university learning management system, Bb learn.
4. Other • Participate in all program training and leadership experiences. (Fall/August 12-23; Spring/January 6-10). • Assist with departmental projects as needed. • Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications • Possess teaching or group facilitation experience. • Experience working with first-year college students or similar age groups. • Demonstrate maturity and the ability to function as a member of a team. • Promote a dynamic, inclusive, caring, and cooperative environment amongst all staff members. • Be in good academic, financial, and disciplinary standing within the University throughout the period of employment • Available to start Monday, August 12th, two weeks before fall classes start.
Preferred Qualifications • Admitted to a graduate program in Educational Psychology. • Understanding and application of student development theory. • Previous teaching experience at a high school or college level. • Commitment to a multi-year placement. • Proficient with technology, specifically Microsoft Outlook and PeopleSoft. • Self-starter who can excel with minimal supervision.
CompensationThe graduate assistant stipend is for a 20 hour a week, academic year commitment and is set by the Department of Educational Psychology.
